1986-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ Center Axle Disconnect (CAD) Delete/Bypass

A CAD delete on a Jeep YJ blocks the vacuum actuated engagement of four-wheel drive in Dana 30 differentials. A CAD system is an alternative to locking hubs. It works by splitting the longer axle shaft into two pieces. CAD systems are typically used in front drive axles on four wheel drive vehicles. Time is no friend to the CAD system. The vacuum lines can crack, the vacuum motor can fail, or the system can be compromised in another manner, and cause the Jeep to be stuck in two-wheel-drive… that’s no fun. Further, the two-piece axle is not as strong as a one-piece design. Fortunately, the stronger and more reliable one-piece axle from a TJ or ‘non-disconnect’ XJ are direct swaps. I was just talking about this yesterday!

Building a 1989 Jeep YJ.

We haven't had time to dig into it yet but we know it has the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder, auto transmission, and factory A/C. Here's what we're starting with...

We're not exactly sure where we're going with it but I'm thinking we want to fit 33s. Maybe a 2.5" suspension lift with 1.25" body lift so we can use softer springs. I'd also like to find a set of full doors; we already have a hard top (minus the back glass). Chrome has got to go but other than that, we won't know until we start going through it. If anyone has any pointers, I'd love to hear them!

Update time! A cross beam support was welded in with shock tabs and we've installed new leaf springs and shocks so the Jeep is now lifted about 3 inches! We also completely painted the frame with POR-15 so rust shouldn't be an issue ever again. Finished up the day by installing new body mounts and then lowered the body back onto the frame.
