The second generation of the Jeep Wrangler, TJ was launched in 1997 as the successor to the Jeep Wrangler YJ. The Jeep Wrangler was a soft-top SUV and it was offered with two engine options, 2.4-liter straight-four or a 4.0-liter straight-six. The production of Jeep Wrangler TJ was finalized in 2006.
Jeep Wrangler YJ generation was criticized hard by Jeep fans. According to hardcore Jeepers, the designers disfigured the Wrangler YJ with rectangular headlights. Because of all the backlash, on Jeep Wrangler TJ, the lights are round again and the jeep is finally back to its old self.
The 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ looked a lot like the famous CJ-7. Its "retro" look was indeed the desired effect, but the two vehicles were very different from a mechanical point of view. Nearly 80 percent of the parts had been redesigned.
The TJ retained many of the classic Jeep features, such as round headlights, folding windshield (first appeared in 1940), and removable doors. It gave the choice of a convertible top or a removable hardtop. A factory-installed sports bar was also standard.
There are many off-road vehicles that are technically better, of higher quality and more economical in consumption than the Jeep Wrangler TJ. However, the Wrangler is always reliable and durable.
Its stock-simple construction and simply designed, low-load engines usually have a long lifespan. The consistent renunciation of comfort extras such as window regulators, navigation screens or electronically controlled chassis help the model to be one of the most reliable vehicles ever.
